Poster Layout Sketches

Here are my layout sketches for how my poster could look.

I like the TV idea as it is the most iconic feature from the film so could be easily recognised. I like the "they're here" quote as it is weaved in with the static. The colour represents the amount of light there is in the film.

I like the grey one as it features geometric shapes in the style of Saul Bass as well as the chair from the film which is moved from one circle to another by the Poltergeists. I think the gradient makes the poster look scary and makes people fearful of what may happen and what the chair means.

I do like the clown as it is a universally scary image that I feel would instantly set the mood for a scary film. However, it is not iconic enough to be linked to the film so I don't think it would be a good image for the poster.

I really like the staircase as it uses negative space and creates a mood of mystery to what is coming down the stairs. The dark blue also adds mystery and coldness.

I do like the use of the sign from the film in the orange poster as it would make people wonder why they are leaving the town. I don't think it is linked to the plot of the film enough though and the orange doesn't suit the film either.

The silhouette of Carol-Anne in the green one is quite chilling which would make people want to know more but I think it doesn't link to the plot of the film enough.

Sketches

Some initial sketches I did from the Poltergeist movie in the style of Saul Bass

Horror Themed Typefaces & Comments

The Poltergeist Screenshots

Whilst I was watching the movie I decided to take some screenshots so that I could use it as a resource when designing and brainstorming.

Chosen Movie

I decided to choose the 1982 film The Poltergeist as it is a film I have seen already so am familiar with and it has a lot of symbols for me to work with in a Saul Bass style

Poster Research

I first researched some horror movie posters to see what the conventions of a horror movie poster contains so that I could incorporate them into my design so that it can be easily recognised as a horror movie poster.
I also looked at some horror movie posters made in the style of Saul Bass to see how others have handled the task.

Part 2 Brief: Horror Movie Poster

Part 2 of Unit 3 is to design a poster for a horror movie of our choice in the style of Saul Bass

Final Storyboard for 'The Shawshank Redemption' Main Titles

Here is the final storyboard for my main titles.

Saul Bass Inspired Typeface

These are the Saul Bass inspired letters I made for the credits that will be on my storyboard.

Initial Storyboard

Then I made my first storyboard by drawing out my initial idea on paper.

Storyboard Brainstorm

I then made a brainstorm of all the information to go into my storyboard to remind myself of my ideas and to have a clear plan before I begin.

Sketches

These are some Saul Bass inspired sketches of items linked to the Shawshank Redemption to get me thinking about what I want to use in my storyboard. It has also helped me to think about what the objects will look like which is why I had done a few versions of each of the items.

Mood Boards

Here are my mood boards to help me with my storyboard as it reminds me of the clear themes and key objects so that I can interpret them in my own way while including a Saul Bass style.

Create Your Own Saul Bass Inspired Typeface

Next we had to create our own Saul Bass inspired typeface for the movie you chose.
I came up with this one that has thick and thin lines to it which I think makes it different and interesting to look at. I feel it is in a Saul Bass 'style' as it has a handmade appearance to it and is bold. I think I could make it more like Saul Bass by making the letters more random and bolder.
